Some folks learn for the fun of it, some folks learn to show off at weddings! some learn to compete in Dance Sport competitions around the country or at international competitions such as the Gay Games or Out Games! Many in the LGBTQAI Community often find it much better to learn the tango with a group that supports same sex partners dancing. Regardless of the motivations for a student to the Tango, the traditional dance roles based on the sex of the dancer is not as rigid as in the hetero world! A dancer can learn both roles and be in the leader position with one dance partner and in the follower position with another dance partner -- sometimes, this changes between the songs and music that's played with the same dance partner if both know both roles well.
Paola Bordon is the Argentinian instructor who takes her time teaching "Queer Tango" at the Center on Halsted to beginners, intermediates and advanced students on Friday nights at the Center on Halsted's 3rd Floor Gym that some of the Team Chicago members are starting to participate in on Friday nights. During the classes, she would break down the steps; provide exercises for the students to improve their posture and dance style; provide instant feedback to the students while putting them as ease; and to show students to dance both in the leader role or the follower role. In Queer Tango a student would learn a bit of both and practice both, so you can identify what works best for you and your dance partner(s). "The role are less ridgid compared to traditional male/female dance roles in heterosexual tango dances", said Bourdon.
"She is very patient in the way she teaches and have a good way to balance each lesson depending on the skill sets of the class participants for the night", said Kyle Chang who is new to her class. "It's something I have not done yet in life and it was time to start learning some of these more formal dances." With Marriage Equality initiatives; the 2013 Out Games and the 2014 Gay Games all in the foreseeable future, Team Chicago would agree with Mr. Chang -- It's Time to start learning!
Interested in the Tango? Give it a try! Join Team Chicago and Paola and other students on Friday nights in the months of April and June to try out and learn "Queer Tango"
